Are my clubs too short

aces, yeah I’m now I’m at 2* flat but I really need to be flat compared to “standard” anyway so it was not surprising to me. I’m now operating from a 37 3/4” 6iron. It took quite a while for me to find the right mix and I got differing professional opinions along the way too, but in the end I had to go with a gut feeling on the issue and it worked. Best of luck.

Customwork . Thanks for the comments. If this latest adjustment doesn’t help I am going to try adding length to a couiple of irons as an experiment. If it works…we’ll do the set. Did you need to adjust the lie angle to accomodate the extra length?

5aces, I couldn’t help but think of my own situation when I read the end of your post. I was having some consistency issues with my iron set, and saw a story about Anthony Kim and how he chokes down about 2 inches on all of his clubs. Long story shorter…I lengthened all of my irons which has given me the confidence that even if I’m not swinging hard, I will generate enough club head speed to reach my targets. Adding a 1/2 inch to my irons has resulted in at least a full club longer shots for me. The funniest part is, I choke down about a 1/2 inch more than I used too. That extra length is actually just a security blanket for me, but it has worked so drastically well I wouldn’t even consider changing it back.

An interesting topic. I have a similar issue with centre to toe impact. Fittings by three different qualified fitters resulted in three different possible solutions. 1. reduce club length by 1/4 inch and flatten shaft by 1/2 degree 2. maintain standard shaft length and flatten lie by 1and 3/4 degrees 3. maintain standard length and increase lie to 1 degree upright

I’m just about to try the upright having had my clubs adjusted. Will report back.

As an aside, last yearI had the opportunity to try a 6 iron with a shaft 2 inches longer than standard and 4 degrees flat. Could not believe how well I hit it. Gets confusing, doesn’t it?

ZacMac, when in doubt, have just the #6 or #5 lengthened and compare with the clubs that remain the same. It is much easier to find out it may be you or something else and not the clubs. More people should consider this option because it is a great way to do actual comparative testing.

So I went to a club fitting and they suggested I add a half inch to my sticks…I am still a little worried that it might be me and not my clubs.

ZacMac, Welshman could be right but here is what I would do first. Have someone who knows the swing look at you (or a good clubfitter) and see if you are coming out of the shot coming into impact. What I mean is that you could be straightening one or both of your legs as you go through impact and thus coming out of the ball. Both knees need to be bent as you go through impact or you may hit the ball on the toe more often. A good clubfitter should be able to pinpoint your swing problem and or an equipment specification problem

    How tall are you?

If you are consistently hitting on the toe then the club could either be too short or the lie angle needs to be adjusted. It could also be a combination of the two.

Did you get fit for the irons?
