Hybrids vs long irons

I’m finding myself playing some of the “fun” (also read “short”) courses without ever pulling out any Metals because I’m able to control my long irons quite well (most of the time?). Living near Cog Hill, I’m looking forward to trying my strategy at #1 and #3. The one and only time I played Dubs, I was still in the “grip it and rip it” mind-set, but still managed to make it around in 47-47. Not bad for an occasional hacker at the time that didn’t play much.

That said, I’m still a proponent of conventional clubs, mostly because that’s what I have. What bothers me these days is that there are so many iron sets being sold without any irons available longer than a 4 iron. There are a number of these being sold by Golfworks that I’ve decided against for that reason.

I am not sure if the long iron is a must to play really good golf. With todays long par 4s and par 5s where the guys have 200 yards+ into a hard green, it is much easier to hit a soft landing hybrid than a harder to hit high fade with a long iron. Very few players can do that.

I have the Maltby Trouble outs and it is hard to hit a stinger with them, but I have no problem with direction even if they hit it higher. In fact Hogan wanted to hit his long irons as high as possible for distance.

I think the hybrid forgiveness and less distance variation is more important than trajectory control from tee with an long iron.

just removed the 6iron myself for a 35 deg trouble out hybrid. Goes high, but rough or bad hit do not matter that much. Stays in the bag and I hit the driver 240+...

I think it all depends on your swing. I tend to sweep the ball away with long-irons and find rescue/hybrid clubs give a better result FOR ME. If you can clip the ball away nicely with a 3 iron or lower, stick with an iron. I say live and let live…... I use a hybrid 3 but the 4 iron from the set…...I use them “for the distance” but also swap from one to the other depending on lie and accuracy needed. There is no right and wrong in my opinion.

Would love to hear from others on this topic too. Personally, I love my hybrids—I rarely use my long irons. I find the hybrids easier to hit, especially from the rough. Plus they are very forgiving (I have Taylormade Burner hybrids).

With that said, I don’t think they have to be mutually exclusive of each other.

I’m trying to figure out why someone would use a hybrid over a long iron. I’m 55 now and I’m hitting my 3 iron better than ever, so good that I decided to replace my 4 wood with a 2 iron. What makes hybrids so popular these days?
