lipoutlefty, let me know how you do with them after a few rounds. My guess is that you will really like them.

Just in time Mr Maltby, I was hoping to hear from you before the weekend was over. I just bought the 851’s (the 900’s had no 3 iron). Thanks for the information.

lipoutlefty, you will not see any left handed forgings from the GolfWorks because of the cost of the forging dies. It simply makes it prohibitive because of the volume sold. Sorry.
In every test I have ever done (the most notable with Raymond Floyd for a Golf Magazine article) no one has ever been able to detect a difference in a cast club vs. a forged club. Many tour pros has tried the test and failed. What we and most other manufacturers have done in the past is to make up the exact same head in both cast and forged and build them up to identical specifications. Forged is simply a player thing (and a manufacturer’s thing) in thinking that forgings are softer feeling. Yes, metals in some irons are softer than others, but again, no golfer can feel it.
Just to throw this in here; the same was true for persimmon heads vs. laminated maple heads where golfers always felt that persimmon was more solid than a laminated maple head. Truth was that no one could tell the difference.
Actually, it’s your choice on both irons you mentioned. Both are very playable. I do like the SL shaft as it has generated many good comments and nothing negative that I know about.

Mr Maltby,
I recently asked about possible future plans on any forged left handed irons coming out…i’m tempted to give in and go with a cast club. Being left handed I have a limited choice…i’ve narrowed it down to the CER series. Which would you reccomend? the 900 or 851UM? They both have the same MPF i think, 851+...would going from forged to cast really be that noticable in feel? I’ll probably go with the dynamic gold SL S300 for shafts. Any thoughts, suggestions or should I hold out and wait for a possible set of awesome forged left handed irons coming out in 2009?
