thruzek, I have just been working on this area in the new fitting book, so it’s a timely question. Also, sorry I missed your question earlier.
With today’s drivers having radiused soles and also many different sole shapes, it is necessary to use a Golf Club Gauge to measure driver loft accurately. The key to measuring the loft is to get the driver positioned in the Golf Club Gauge at the correct lie angle and with the face angle set to zero degrees (square face angle). Next, you simply slide the loft angle protractor up to the face and measure (read) the loft at 1/2 the face height. I also like to read it at 1/2” above the middle of the face height (sometimes also 1/4’) to give me the loft where the ball may be hit to get minimum spin and maximum (best is a better word) trajectory. As you know, a Golf Club Gauge is not a cheap item to buy. Every one of our Golf Galaxy stores has a Golf Club Gauge and can measure your drivers loft for you or for that matter any driver you are testing.
