Gregor, basically, the hybrids are shorter club lengths than you would get with a comparable lofted fairway metal. They were originally designed to eliminate the long irons, but have expanded into replacing some fairway metals for some golfers. Usually, when you replace say a 4 iron (example: 24 degrees loft and 38 1/2” long) with say an H4 hybrid (example: 23 degrees loft and 39” long) you will get about 15 more yards (vs. the 10 more yards or so with the old 4 iron) out of the Hybrid than the next shortest hitting club (your 5 iron). Notice here that the H4 hybrid is 1/2” longer in club length than the 4 iron it replaced. Many, but not all hybrids fall into this category for having a club length always 1/2” longer than the club that was replaced. Watch out for this when you buy a hybrid today because some manufacturers use goofy club lengths, so always check them.
